Fishing at Pulau Ubin.

This is a rather delayed entry. One that I really hoped I could do before I went off for a 3 days 2 nights chalet which ended today. Alas, I was too caught up packing, and planning for the chalet that I had barely enough rest.

So anyways, I went on a fishing trip the weekend after Christmas. It is nothing like those fishing trips whereby you pick up your fishing rod and bait and head down to the nearest beach. Rather, we decided to fish at Pulau Ubin.

pulau ubin
The sky was dark when we were headed to Ubin

The last time I went to Pulau Ubin to fish, we caught nothing. Only lots and lots of turtles/terapins/tortoise (choose one) at a disused quarry. Well that was partly because we were ill-equipped having not bought any bait, improper weight rating for the line, and we did not even brought a rod along. But this time, we came prepared! Rod, check! Bait, check! Reel, check! Hook, check! Weights, check!

pulau ubin
As expected, the heavens opened up.

It was tough having to tie all our stuff onto the bikes. We got 6x1.5L bottles of water, 3 bags, 1 medium sized styrofoam box and two fishing rods. Since it rained anyways, we took refuge under a shelter and prepped ourselves for the 20 minutes journey ahead.

pulau ubin
The styrofoam box was a bitch to tie to the bike.

We set off for Noordin beach, as it has 2 pavilions and there is a toilet located nearby the beach. There is another beach though, but we were satisfied with what we had and set up camp. It was raining heavily, the wind was blowing hard, and it was such a pain trying to pitch the tent. I wonder how the guys who climbed Mt Everest manage to do theirs.

pulau ubin
The 3 Musketeers.

Right when we thought that we came fully equipped, we realised that we were missing something. A holder to secure the fishing rods after we cast! lol. But we got that covered and improvised with what little resources we have; rubbish. Thank God for our engineering backgrounds. Nothing is impossible.

pulau ubin
We fashioned one out of junk.

pulau ubin
We laid the tent on some carpet grass and covered it with groundsheet.

pulau ubin
We were getting desperate.

pulau ubin
My God, is an awesome God.

It was nearly 3 hours before any action happened. We talked, fished, discussed fishing line strategies, admire the sunset, and finally, we got it! We got a fish! It was not my first time, having caught so many fishes with dad when I was younger. But it was my first time tying my own hook, my own sinker, and actually getting a fish. One can sense the morale boost in our camp after we caught the fish. It was definitely thrilling!

pulau ubin
Look! We caught one!

pulau ubin
Cockles for bait. The veterans at the camp next to us, advised us that these cockles should be soaked in Belacan overnight for more effect.

pulau ubin
Maggie for Supper.

pulau ubin
Worms donated from the camp next to us.

No fishes were caught for the rest of the trip. At least, we learnt something from this experience and will come back with more knowledge and a higher success rate. We slept shortly after 1am, amidst the loud music from nearby Malaysia, strong winds and a really uncomfortable stone bench to sleep on. It was a cold, cold night, and I got maybe 2 hours of sleep at most.

pulau ubin
Top of Observation Tower.

We fished again early in the morning, got bored, and decided to leave for Chek Jawa. Oh my, a lot has changed since my last visit. There is now the coastal boardwalk, the mangrove walk, and even an observation tower! Looking down on the ground, I can fondly remember that I walked on these grounds just a few years back. Chek Jawa has changed. A lot.

pulau ubin
Cute Lizard.

pulau ubin
Can you spot the Fiddler Crab? (Its in the middle of the picture)

One thing for sure is we spotted a lot of wildlife and flora at Chek Jawa. The picture above shows a fiddler crab. Yeap, it is small. The fiddler crab is a type of crab that sports a pincer, larger than the other. Only the male variants have this feature and it looks kinda cool if you see it 'live'. Mudskippers were everywhere, and another thing I remembered is that Nipah, a plant, is used to make 'Atap Chee.' the chewy thingy you have in the Ice Kacang. Cool can?

pulau ubin
Quarry we came across on the way back to the jetty.

pulau ubin
Home Sweet Home!

It was an enjoyable trip all in all and an adventure nevertheless. Most importantly, I get to spend some time with my friends who have played an invaluable part in defining myself as a person. As for Chek Jawa, it is a must visit. You will definitely gain something and appreciate what the Mangrove has in store for you.

Till then, Pulau Ubin rocks!

Christmas-ing at Bukit Timah.

I was busy for the past few days during the Christmas period. No, I wasn't messing around with the Christmas tree or roast turkey or what have you. Instead, I was busy having a hell of an adventure with some fun-loving buddies exploring Bukit Timah and Pulau Ubin.

Photobucket
This Big Rock Greeted Us at the Foot.

So I climbed Bukit Timah during the Christmas period. Yeap, the 163.63 metre tall pile of dirt that is by itself, a Nature Reserve. It is great fun spotting spiders and I got quite a few pictures of them chilling around the Reserve. I think the hike was more of a "Spot-the-Spider" Contest. :P

Photobucket
You can see people Jogging down the Slope at 8am in the morning.

I have climbed Bukit Timah so many times, I lost count. I believe it is in the region of 10 times or so, and there was once I tumbled down the steep initial slope when I was much younger. Ouch!

Photobucket
It wasn't long before we found Spiderman chilling.

Photobucket
I just love the way the morning sun casts a shadow on the trees.

Photobucket
If I hadn't been busy sleeping away in Botany Class, I'd knew what fruit this was.

Photobucket
Another Spider.

Photobucket
Same Spider.

Photobucket
Nearing the Summit. I know the photos are anti-climax. But yeap, what do you expect from 163.63m? A full step-by-step "How to Get to Bukit Timah Hill Summit" post?

Photobucket
An Official Summit Rock.

There were no views of the horizon, no nice scenery. Heck, there is not even a "Tip of the Mountain" where you can plant your country's flag! heheh. But then again, its worth keeping and protecting Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. Trees are good hmmmkay... They keep the oxygen levels in check and those cute animals/insects are just so lovely.

Photobucket
Some telecommunications tower at the peak. You like clouds dunch ya?

Photobucket
This Map can be found at the peak. And there is not much of a view at the South View Hut. Urgh.

How do I know? Well, right after we hit the summit, we decided to find another spot with hopes that the views are better. And the "South View Hut" seemed so promising! It deceived us big time and there were no views! Only tall trees and minute views through small pockets in the dense foliage. Sobs.
Photobucket
Spider. Again.

Photobucket
Mushrooms/Fungi/Whatever you want to call it cause I am not a professional. But do you know that MOST mushrooms are poisonous?

I hate mushrooms. Well, I used to hate mushrooms. After all, it is a fungus of sorts (right?) and fungus, equals to dirty things. But that thought turned 360 degrees when one fine day. On a school field trip to a mushroom farm, I tasted those huge black mushrooms, fried in oyster sauce. Oh my... It revolutionised the way I see mushrooms. They're so chewy and yummy!

Photobucket
Crooked Tree.

Photobucket
Tall Tree.

There were a lot of huge trees at the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. This was one particular example. Their tree trunks are many times my body size and I believe it is older than the oldest person on Earth. If those trees could talk, I bet they could recount the times of the Japanese Occupation. Huge la~ And they are so tall and majestic! Just like the living trees I saw in Lord of The Rings.

Photobucket
Canopy.

The forest canopy blocks strong winds, blocks direct rainfall and sunlight. It blocks so much sun, that the area under the canopy is sparsely vegetated. And in Brunei, the canopy is so thick that when night falls, it is impossible to see your own outstretched hand because it blocks out the moonlight too! Scary.

Bukit Timah is great fun for a chillax outing, away from the bustling city life and ideal for spider-hunting. There are so many spiders, that I bet you'd get to see at least one on every visit. (like duh~)

My Clear Retainers Hurts Me!

The moment of truth came and I took off my braces about a week back. The experience was as if I had been unshackled from the 7 levels of hell, no longer needing to feel anything metal in my mouth. I imagined myself like a bird, spreading its wings and flying high and free. But I was wrong...
retainers
My Retainers... They sure look weird
The unshackling of my teeth meant that I had to go for one week without anything to keep my teeth in place, and as predicted, my teeth moved. It moved so much that when I tried on the retainers, my whole mouth was sore. The pain was intense. Oh my, even the word pain is an understatement.
retainers
See the puddle of saliva there? heee~
I am currently in my 5th hour on my retainers. The pain is still there although less intense, and I dare not remove my retainers and attempt to eat. Even the thought of eating scares me! I hope this pain goes away very very soon...
retainers
The retainers don't look obvious doesn't it?

Israel Admits to Organ Thefts.

Israel has admitted that it harvested organs from the dead bodies of Palestinians and Israelis in the 1990s, without permission from their families.

The admission follows the release of an interview with Jehuda Hiss, the former head of Israel's forensic institute, in which he said that workers at the institute had harvested skin, corneas, heart valves and bones from Israelis, Palestinians and foreign workers.

Mr Wise Guy's 23rd Birthday.

It was my 23rd birthday a few days back, and I must say, the sequence of events was the most memorable ever. I have never received so many presents and celebrated it with so many people! Its great to feel loved, appreciated, and learn that I play a central role in so many people's lives. Its great to turn 23! Hmmmm, let me recall what happened...
Photobucket
The celebrations started with a Left4Dead2 all-nighter with my Shuqun Secondary class buddies. OMG. 4 hours of L4D2 at Selegie from 1am to 5am. Thereafter had MacDonald's for breakfast, and slept for 22 hours straight the next day! Dang, there should be four of us, but one of us pulled out. So, Lef4Dead2 was actually, Left3Dead2 that day. It was also the first time for me being vehicle commander for a friend of mine who just passed...

On my birthday itself, I went Ice-skating! Pics are not with me yet. But its okay, I got a camera! The S90! Weeeee~ This blog is in need of pictures, and I got a Semi-Pro one! Gonna take piccy piccy all the way!

After all that ice-skating, went cycling with my Uni buddies the next day. Cycled all the way to town, got screwed by security at Esplanade, and camwhored at the Benjamin Sheares Bridge! wooooo~

When I got home, there were present waiting for me! First was a Salomon shirt from my dearest sis, and a pink formal shirt from parents. Nice can?
Photobucket
Dang, this is the best birthday ever! Can I do it all over again? Can I? Can I?

India, The Other side of Outsourcing.

It it always worrying to hear about the side effects of something supposedly good such as globalisation. The consequences may be too great to be reversed and before we know it, everything is lost. In the case of India, the possibility of the country losing its rich cultural heritage is indeed very real. Watch, and decide for yourselves.

Its Freaking me Out.

Something weird is happening around here. I'm not sure if I am the the all-innocent, all-blur, unknowing victim of sorts just like "The Truman Show." But this is freaking me out...

During the course of my examinations, many thoughts raced through my mind. From the expected equations, derivations and physical theories, to the ultimate question, "What is the Purpose of Life?" I confided this matter to a close one, explaining in detail what I was thinking, how I felt about it, and asked for their opinion. And I think because I wasn't completely satisfied with the rationale that was brought across to me, the Almighty decided to put things into his own Mighty Hands.

Like for instance, yesterday during Friday sermon entitled "Fulfilling the Purpose of Our Existence," the imam explained the purpose of our creation.

Last Thursday, a close friend of mine published in her blog a youtube video entitled "The Purpose of Life." Prior to this, I have not contacted her for the past week or so.

So far I've already got two major occurrences that attempts to explain the question I posed last week. Call it coincidence or whatever, but from the way I see it, there are 365 days, 52 weeks in a year, and it had to be this week, and it had to be that Friday. Freaky ain't it?

Oh anyways, I got to catch a Twilight movie marathon fore free today! Thanks bro!

Fuiyo! Left4Dead2 Rocks!

You guys should start checking out Left4Dead2!

Great fun!

Drama at Jurong Point.

I could not believe that an old man in his fifties challenged me to a fight! Read on to find out what happened...

I was making my way out of the basement carpark on my bike when this happened. In Jurong Point, bikers have to slot in the cashcard manually into the machine to pay the parking charges, and this time it was no different. I rode slowly to the gantry, slot my cashcard into the machine and the gantry opened.

Prior to slotting the cashcard in, I noticed a foreign worker standing before the gantry. He was waiting for me to make payment so that the gantry would open. He had with him a trolley full of equipments stacked up higher than the gantry. Problem is, the moment he stepped through the raised gantry, it came back down leaving me still stuck behind!

I was stunned! I pressed the intercom on the machine. I had to wait for a bit before somebody came at the other end and he instructed me to slot in my cashcard. In my mind, I thought that he would check the system for any errors through the terminal or something. But to my horror, I saw a further deduction! That means I paid twice the amount!

(Coincidentally I topped my cashcard just a few mins ago at Jurong Point and had taken note of the value)

I panicked for a bit, not knowing what to do. I pressed the intercom button again, and told them that they had charged extra. After shouting through the machine for a few minutes (which had some faulty speakers and I doubt the person understood what I said), I somehow agreed with the person that I meet him at the control room at the carpark exit.

I was in a rather jovial mood, and I met up with a security person at the exit. I told him of the problem I faced but his response didn't turn out to be rather helpful. We conversed in our native languages and here's a short translated dialogue.

Man #1: You have to find the worker to compensate you the 80 cents.
Me: Ehhh, that's not fair! The worker is working in Jurong Point, the error is on your side, and you want me to bear the costs?
Man #1: Okay, I will help you find the foreign worker but you must help me to describe how he looks like.
Me: What? You mean I have to find him with you? You have CCTV cameras don't you?
Man #1: Yes we have.
Me: Then make use of it and trace the worker. I want to speak to your supervisor.
Man #1: I am the supervisor.
Me: (Repeats telecast of explanation)

An older man wearing the same uniform came over to join us.

Man #2: No no no, no refund!
Me: Hey! You mean I have to bear the cost of your worker's fault? I should be compensated at least!

This comment infuriated me like how the supervolcano in the movie, 2012 erupted.

Man #1 + Me: (Explains the problem)
Man #2: No no no, no refund.
Me: (Definitely pissed off and starts to raise my voice)
Man #2: You don't talk like that to me boy. You're not happy is it?
Me: Of course I'm not happy! A worker comes over, I paid for his mistake, you want me to be happy?
Man #2: You not happy come out, we'll settle this outside! Come!

This totally stunned me. I was at the brink of laughing! hahaha... Cute la~

Me: Ehhh old man, you're like a child!
Man #2: Come Come!
Man #1: I'm sorry but here's the 80 cents. Roughly what time did it happen? I will check the footage.
Me: About 5-10 mins ago.
Man #2: Boy, you don't talk to me like that.
Me: Ehhh go away, I don't want to talk to you.
Man #1: I'm so sorry... Can you pass me your number and your name, I will contact you regarding this matter.

Oh my God.

Even right now, I still couldn't believe it. lol. But that goes to show that even the elderly has issues with their ego. hahah! Okay I was rude to him in the end, but tell me who wouldn't? He didn't get the point at all and he insisted that I wouldn't get a refund. Come on man, in a world of technology, you should at least use the CCTV to investigate before you open your mouth.

Otherwise, I wrote a letter of commendation for Man #1's patience in his service.

On another note, exams are over! 7 months of freedom ahead! Weeeeee~
